Jerky is a food enjoyed by many because it is easy to preserve, easy to transport, and quite tasty. Jerky is packed with nutrition and flavor, and the process was originally created to prevent fresh meat from going bad.

The History of Beef Jerky

The name jerky comes from the Quechua word ch’arki that literally translates to burnt meat. This process took place as early as 1550, and it was first used on alpaca and llama meat. Europeans did not discover jerky until they arrived in the New World and found a dry meat product that did not need to be consumed immediately. The First Nations people called this “pemmican,” which referred to jerky meat that was added to dried fruit or animal fat.

Jerky became essential as Explorers traveled across North America through locations with limited food and supplies. During this time, jerky was great because meat could be hunted anywhere along the trails and turned into jerky for food storage and ease of traveling.

Over the years, jerky has evolved from a healthy snack to a snack full of unnecessary additives and preservatives, including corn protein and nitrites.

Jawbox Jerky is taking jerky back to the basics with all-natural ingredients and no unnecessary preservatives. Jawbox Jerky uses only whole muscle cuts from USA grass-fed and finished beef. Our jerky is gluten-free and travel-friendly, and with 16 grams of protein per serving, it is the perfect high-protein snack to keep you full in between meals.
