Did you know the way cows are fed has a great impact on the nutrition of their meat? Grass-fed can have different meanings, but it’s been proven that grass-fed and grain-fed cows have different nutrient compositions.

Here are some of the differences between grass-fed and grain-fed beef.

Difference Between Grass-Fed and Corn-Fed Beef

Pasture-raised or grass-fed beef is not just the newest way to get consumers to part from their money. There is actually a proven difference between grass-fed and grain-fed beef, and it shows that grass-fed beef is better nutritionally than the latter.

Grass-fed cows take far longer to reach their processing weights, and because they are not supplemented with corn or grains to bulk up their diet, they weigh less as well. This method of raising beef is considered more sustainable, but it is also more expensive to the rancher.

On the other hand, the additional costs can be worth it in the long run because grass-fed beef is higher in nutrients, including antioxidants and vitamins. Grass-fed beef has twice as many omega-3 fatty acids compared to its grain-fed counterparts and has less fat overall.

Finally, grass-fed beef has a slightly gamey taste. Because there is far less intramuscular fat, it can seem a bit meatier than corn-fed beef. It is also said to be a little chewier and cook faster, as well.

While corn-fed beef is the most common type of beef, it doesn’t mean that it is better. Most people prefer the taste of corn-fed beef because it can have a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture and higher fat content. However, when it comes to nutrition, eating snacks made with grass-fed beef, such as Jawbox Jerky, is a great way to stay full for longer and help your muscles repair themselves after a long workout.
